964 Distributer in Early Engine

Has anybody done the conversion of using a 964 dual distributer in an early engine?

If so, what was the process?

I am planning on building a 2.8 RSR engine and am thinking of using the 964 distributer instead of a single Bosch dual-plug distributer.

Since I am building the engine from scratch, would it be easier to change the gear drive on the crankshaft or modify the distributer?

Comments? Suggestions?

The 964 distributor spins the same way as every 911 distributor except a 3.0L 911SC, so you should be fine with the drive gear.

Steve at Rennsport does this conversion using the trigger from an SC distributor, and adds mechanical advance. You need to fabricate some wiring, but it is fairly painless.

Tom,

Thanks for your reply.

Wentzville, eh? I know that place. Driven by it anyway.

As for the 964 dist, I am not too sure which way to go. I would like to use some new technology in the engine, such as Motec or Electromotive, but the price of stuff is outrageous. Not to say that a dual RSR dizzy is cheap.

The link to Aaron's work is interesting. May have to keep an eye on his progress.

Then there is the induction system. Programmable fuel injection that can be adjusted on the fly would be nice. Tweak the mixture for economy when crusing the highway, then tweak for performance when the punk Camaro driver pulls up along side.

Meh heh heh heh!

What are you planning on using for cams/induction?

Read this thread to get some ideas about inexpensive EFI:

As for cams, I am leaning toward the 906 or RSR sprint cam. Another choice would be the GE60 or 80.

I have a high butterfly MFI system from a 3.0 RSR that needs to be rebuilt. Throttle bodies need several new components and the pump needs to be gone through and a 2.8 cam installed. The pump isn't an original "red cap", but rather a 2.2 pump that has been altered. To rebuild this older mechanical system would cost anywhere from 1K to 2K. Maybe more. System would be tricky to get set up, but would be reliable. Any sources for rebuilding these components?

I like the TWM throttle bodies and the options to install injectors low, medium or high in the air stream. Much mulah for this setup.

Somewhere down the line I think I will end up with a programmable FI system, cause I want to be able to adjust fuel/air on the fly. Monitoring F/A mixture with a Hall meter and CHT/EGT would make it easy to fine tune. Engine ignition would be another issue.
