Should I be worried about this fan housing weld?
Hey Guys,
Just putting back together my engine and I noticed these welds on the fan housing at the base of the struts that hold up the alternator. Weld looks somewhere between OK and sloppy and the cracks are still visible where the weld is not. I figure anyone who knows how to spell TIG welder should know what they are doing, but do you guys think this is a serviceable part?

You should be able to locate a good used one cheap.

Oh, I thought that that was a bird poop.
You can either get another one, or grind that down and have it re welded by someone that is little better |

as long as the tips of the fan blades don't rub on the housing when the belt is tensioned normally, it'll probably be ok. not a lot of stress there.

I replaced my fan shroud that had a crack like that. I rewelded it first at an aviation weld shop. The trouble with it afterwards is that the belt wouldn't stay tight with all 5 shims under the cup washer. It woud squeak revving up. It warped with all of the heat cycling and cracking.

Thanks Guys,
If I go junk spelunking, what housing should I look for? Here is the fan I have. It looks like I have a early 245mm with a 1.3:1. From what I have read, the later 245mm houseings were diferent than the early houseings. So is there any special markings I should look for? Thanks again
