3.6 conversion pump drive solution

Most 3.6 motors come with a power steering pump driven by the one of the cams. When you use a 3.6 in an earlier car you ditch the pump and install a cap ("camshaft block off cover") to cover the exposed cam drive. Patrick sells one of these caps for $89 and I think Porsche or PMS sells one. This was my lighter, cheaper Yankee solution:

I chopped the pump drive off the end of the cam and installed a cam housing plug for less than $3 (my cost).

EDIT: The plug is Porsche part # 930 105 161 00

Chris,

Are those caps simply pressed in or do you use some sort of sealant as well?

Pressed in with a little sealant (Loctite 518).

Will this plug affect the cam's placement, i.e. place it out too far and screw up the chain alignment?

The cam doesn't touch the plug at the end so it won't move the cam. The is the arrangement that, the left cam has, earlier cars had and 964's without power steering 964's (i.e. RS) have.

EDIT: I'm not sure if the 964's have a blockoff cover or a different cam. I could be wrong on this.

$3 vs. $89 or more? Way to go Chris! :)

A good use for the power steering pump is to circulate the gearbox oil..cooler and or squirters..

Kind regards
David

That sounds like a great idea.

so you have to remove cam to chop off the drive end or did I miss something. Great info, thanks! getting ready for 993 install in my 914/6.

Yes, you just remove the cam and lop of the end so it looks like the other cam.

This seems nice, but is it a proven solution? How do you know it's not going to pop off when things get hot and start flexing?

Jeff Alton 02-27-2005 10:48 AM

The end plug for cylinders 1,2,3 never seems to pop off, so I would think having the same solution on both sides would work. This is the way all the pre 964 engines are.

OK. Forgot there was one on the other side already. Nice.
