Oh, Heck

I am removing the SSI heat exchangers from my engine. I am using a long 8mm allen socket with a T-bar. 4 out of 5 came out OK. #5 is slipping. Somebody else used the wrong size allen socket. (5/16?) So, is there a long EZ-out that you use? Go to a 9 mm allen socket?

Hi

Check that the allen socket is seating right in, I had a case where the exhaust stud has been left too long, which means you tighten the barrel nut and eventually the sockets slips.

My solution was to use a dremel to hollow the end of the allen socket so that it fitted over the head of the stub (this gave about 2mm more grip area)

Try 2 things, spray with a penetrant and leave it overnight. If that doesn't work then heat it up with a torch. If all else fails you can jam a 12 point into it. (but I admit that might be bad advice!)

Hammer a Torx driver into it then use heat around the base of the bolt....

I used the craftsman bolt out. See this post

It worked great.

I followed NevenM's advise, and hollowed out the end of my 8 mm allen socket. It still slipped. I then drilled out the top of the stud. I used the allen socket, and it still slipped. The end of the socket was thin, so I gave it some love taps to crush it a bit. I then used the socket, and voila, the barrel nut broke free. So, problem solved. Thanks to everybody for their advise.
