Top End Rebuild Questions

1) What can I expect to pay for a top-end rebuild (valve guides and whatever else needs to be done on a 64k mile engine)?
2) Can anyone in the North NJ area suggest a reputable shop for this kind of work?

Much appreciated,
Ted

powertech porsche in rockaway
and i'd say it'll run about 5-7k depending on the detail of the rebuild done (retaining cylinders and pistons, and other misc variables).

Thanks for the reply. I've used PowerTech in Rockaway and I didn't realize they did this kind of work. Have you lived in NJ? Have you had any experience with PTech?

Also, the price you quote is for a complete rebuild. I'm just looking for a quote on a heads rebuild (valve guides, clean, springs, etc.)

Thanks again.

I can help you out. I just had Ollie's do all of my machine work for my 3.5L Motronic motor. I had way more done than what you are looking to do it appears, but here is what would apply to you if you are just looking for a top end valve job.

Disassemble Heads
Bead Blast Heads
Surface Heads
Replace 12 Guides (guides included)
Grind Intake & Exhaust Valves (replace if necessary)
Grind Valve Seats
3 angle Vale Job
Set Valve Spring Height
Assemble Heads

Ollie's charges roughly $500 for the above. You would also have to buy new valves if your stock units are out of spec and can't be reused. I needed 6 new intake valves but the exhaust were fine and could be reused.

While the top end is apart, take a good look at your rocker arms and shafts for wear. The rockers can be reconditioned and the shafts polished for about $200.

Of course, twin plugging and porting/polishing would cost significantly extra. Ollie's can be reached at 714.558.7334.

Good Luck!

Ralph

I used to work for powertech, they use a machine shop in dover called verden tool to do all there machining. I used to do prep work on the heads before going to, and all the cleaning of the parts when they came back for assembly.

No experience with Powertech, but the Metro NY PCA lists a few shops.

You might call Rick Deman or Cheech Fernandez at Rennwerke.

I used to work for gene too (small world). Also excellent mech. Powertech did my heads, totall bill was 2400 but that included 24 dilavar head studs, all gaskets and seals, and other misc stuff that you may not need.

If you take out the studs, and honing (lapping ausil cylinders), piston rings, and the 12 exhaust studs that were replaced, that should get you closer to the cost of just the heads.
