magnesium vs. aluminum chain housings and covers

Have a 2.4 that I'm doing a rebuild to an RS-type spec. Has the orginal mag chain housings and covers. Right chain housing and left cover need to be replaced. (Looks like the right timing chain did a nice job machining some grooves in the housing!) I don't see anything that would prohibit the use of the newer aluminum pieces, which are stronger. Can/should I go ahead and use all aluminum parts?

I don't think there is any reason you couldn't change to the aluminum chain housings. Having said that, if your old ones are ok why change them. I had to clean up some corrosion on mine but they cleaned up fine and I reused them. What's wrong with grooves on the inside of the right chain housing? Are the grooves so deep that they are in danger of going through?

Only you can decide what you should and shouldn't use. You'll find all sorts of these decision come up during your rebuild. Use your best judgement and advice from others then decide.

Bill, a while back I posted that Mini-Performance in Toledo Ohio was doing my heads and I think you asked to know how it worked out. ?

Well, I fired it up this weekend and all is well thus far. No leaks and it runs awesome (up to 5000 rpm at least).

Good luck with your project.

Excellent, Tim! I bet you're glad you got it back. Too bad we're so close to winter.

Andy, the chain has machined a nice groove in the area of the sealing surface to the case. I'd say it's about 3-4 mm--enough that I think the sealing surface might be compromised, which is why I want to replace it.

As far as why I'd change to the aluminum: wasn't sure if the mag housings fatique over time in the area of the chain tensioner support post(?). Other than that, there's really no load on the housings so I would think it doesn't matter. If I keep the mag housings, I'll probably pull all the studs out to make sure that the cover sealing surface isn't warped.

If you're going to replace it then I'd get an aluminum one for all the reasons you stated. If you put Carrera tensioners in you'll need aluminum chain covers anyway. My car has aluminum covers on mag housings and has no issues.
