Intermediate shaft bearing's on early Mag case..

I've got a 68S case which is mag and there is no bearing on the intermediate shaft by the oil pump. Must be a low load area but it has some light pitting. Should I not worry about it, or do I absolutely need to send it off to be oversized and get a bearing there?

The area doesn't look worn out in any way and the motor was in pretty decent shape prior to teardown. In fact, I was only going to rebuild the carbs and seal up some small leaks... got carried away and next thing I new I was splitting the case halves

Bill

Bill,

Of course it is desirable to have a bearing there but if it is OK and in spec, there is nothing wrong with leaving it as it is. I assume you are just doing a maintenance rebuild and not building a hotrod mod.

Best,
Grady

While you have this apart, I'd suggest checking the main bearing journal alignment. If you have to line bore, consider cutting new bearing saddles for the intermediate shaft as well. And time certs, etc., etc., etc.

Thanks guys. Yep, just maintenance, no hotrod stuff. Since all main bearing's looked good upon teardown, I'm not really worried this case has been stressed much.. seems that was more common on the larger disp. mag engines. I guess after buttoning up the case and checking that the crank turns freely I'll move foreward. Seem reasonable?

Grady, you coming through Missouri anytime soon?
