It runs, no drama
I fired up the 3 liter turbo engine today after rebuilding it, no surprises, it ran just like it was supposed to.
I put about 30 miles on it, only got on boost once, trying to let it break in. Just thot I'd share ![]() |

Thank you all for the kind words. This was my first six rebuild so I was naturally a little apprehensive going in but I did my homework and evidently it paid off.
I'll put up some pics later tonight. There's a few on my website at http://home.earthlink.net/~sammyg2/ you can prolly tell I don't build websites for a living ![]() The engine is a stock 1980 911SC 3 liter with an aftermarket turbo system that also had a broken dilavar head stud. BTW I have 11 1/2 slightly used head studs for sale ![]() I running around 7 psi boost with no problems but hope to get to 9 psi after I install an intercooler. I was pleasantly surprised when I took the engine apart and found absolutely no damage or significant wear on anything, even after over 100,000 miles on it, with at least 3000 after the installation of the turbo. I hope to get it on a dyno soon to see what it puts out, my best guess right now is somewhere between 240 and 260 hp at the crank, closer to 290 when I get 9 psi and intercooler. A friend of mine drove it before I took it apart and said it would keep up with his hopped up 3.6 powered SC. I took way too long to get this project done but was sooooo happy to be driving it again. I'd forgotten how much I loved this car. I have a little more tinkering to do with the CIS in order to maintain below 13-1 A/F ratio at higher boost pressures but that won't be too hard. I already have it all figured out it's just a matter of doing it. |

I'm in total agreement. No drama is very good. I've only gotten as deep as swapping in sc cams when I did the clutch, but even when I do a valve adjust, the first couple minutes running always has me a bit anxious. Look forward to seeing your handiwork at the next OC run! |

What is involved when going aftermarket turbos? Do you have to swap P&C or not? Stock cam or not? What's the cost of the aftermarket kit and who did you use.
I'm not ready to do it to mine but never hurts to plan.

Stock engine parts throughout.
This reduces the amount of boost i can run but makes more power of the boost i do run. The kits are no longer available (for the past 10 yesrs or so) i bought mine used for a grand. Do a search for BAE, lots O' info. |
