...::: UPDATE :::...

Engine Installed Photo

Car is running rich with 150 main jets according to my "narrow band" a/f gauge (temp setup just to check things out).

Carbs are synchronized, car is running great. Pulls hard to 6500 rpms, idles great, very nice throttle transition/response.

MB911's muffler makes all the right noises/sounds...

I think I'm either going to go to 38mm chokes or 140 main jets (I'll have to consult Richard at PMO for advise).

I've had a "slight delay" in getting this car tuned and on the dyno as my wife had a baby boy last Monday (our 3rd boy!).... But I'm back on track :-)

Here's a pic:

Coingrads on the new baby! Seems like you should name him Carrera or something :)

Cars looking good too.

Hey!!!! No fair changing the choke size until you report the HP numbers!!!!

>>>Hey!!!! No fair changing the choke size until you report the HP numbers!!!!<<<

Agreed. If I change the choke sizes, it will be on the dyno after I dyno the 36mm chokes.

I was just reporting my findings thusfar....

BTW: What do you think about 38mm chokes on this mild combo?

I don't think that it will make a big difference in your top-end HP given that your ports are 34 mms -- and thus gating the airflow. Larger venturi may cost-you some low-end driveability - or not. It's an easy change to make while you're on the dyno. So only testing will tell.

Ummm...no rash decisions until you've gotten used to late-night feedings. :D

Seriously, given the rather mild condition of your engine, I think 38mm chokes would probably hurt your low-end torque. It all depends where and how you drive your car.

jluetjen 11-15-2004 02:44 PM

After checking my numbers, I agree with dd74 -- I think that the larger chokes will hurt your low end driveability some. The gas speeds through the venturis isn't that high even with 36 mm venturis.

TonyG 11-15-2004 03:10 PM

The reason I ask about the 38mm chokes is because when I used to build and race Datsun 510/240Z engines, I used 36mm chokes on 400cc cylinder setups (example: L16 = 1600cc - 400cc per cylinder) which was about right for a 3500rpm-7000rpm setup.

The 3.0 SC engine is 500cc per cylinder yet I'm setup with 36mm chokes....

Given this, isn't 38mm chokes more appropriate?

Right now the power is very linear from 1000rpms up through 6500rpms.

Only if the venturi are gating the intake system. Keep in mind that your intake ports downstream of the carbs are 34 mms.

Uh... yeah. Time to put my thinking cap back on :-)

dumb question (especially when you know the answer)

Is this off of the "pants dyno" or the roller dyno?

TonyG 11-15-2004 03:44 PM

jluetjen

That would be the seat-of-the-pants DynoJet :-)

(perhaps after coming from turbo charged cars everything feels linear :-)

TonyG

KobaltBlau 11-15-2004 04:05 PM

which would mean you have numbers ... ? :D

TonyG 11-15-2004 04:07 PM

KobaltBlau

No numbers yet. The seat of the pants dynojet is my butt. :-)

I do have numbers for my old 944 turbo, but it's not relevant here...

I think you have to take the top of the carbs off, and remove the aux venturie to change the chockes on Webers. I've never been able to do that quickly, and I'm too cheap to do that while on the clock at a dyno.

So...any word?

What do you bet that 187 is a bit lower considering the intakes on an '83 are smaller than on a '78?
