SSI installation questions

Which is the best method, installing the SSi heat exchangers on the engine before I put the engine in the car, or after?

Any tips or tricks regarding the oil lines install?

While on stand; especially if you can invert the engine. Beware of the fact that with some engine stands once the SSI's are installed one may not be able to flip it back over - the SSI's hit the engine stand vertical post. Take care that exhaust studs do not protrude too far when using cylinder nuts (Allen nuts) as you can run out of wrenching feature (the end of the stud pushes the hex key out of the nut). This can make future removal very difficult; use a washer(s) under the cylinder nut if stud is too long. Anti-seize lubricant on exhaust manifold studs and on oil line fitting threads but not on oil line fitting spherical sealing surfaces. Cheers, Jim

If you have a '72, you need to have the oil line (the one that goes under the case) on first before you install the heat exchangers. Otherwise, like me, you'll have the added experience of also being able to remove, and re-install again when your engine is in the car.

"It's never easier than when the engine is on the stand."
