Cheap and 3.3 Turbo motor are two phrases that rarely go together. I know very little about the MegaSquirt system, but I do know that it lacks integrated ignition control, which is an absolute must with any Turbo motor...

I didn't want to say it but since Wayne said it, I'll follow up. I would stick with a good name brand unit like Autronics, DTA (UK Based I think), Motec, Electromotive, Haltech, etc.

A 3.3L motor is a pretty expensive endeavor, although it will costs more to go with one of the name brand units, I think it would be a better choice...

Just my opinion, nothing more....

Wayne, so far ive spent close to five thousand pounds on the case and bits for the engine. When i say cheap i mean sensible. and I also like the idea of it being straight forward. (SDS) the more questions ive asked about mods for the 3.3 the more peolpe say that efi is the way forward so im assuming that a sensibly priced well known (11yrs old) system is better than the stock CIS. Brian, Im in agreement with you on using a good name brand system but Im seems like, although its at the lower end of the market, the SDS is quite a good choice for someone who wants the benefits of efi but hasn't got the budget for the real high end stuff (i didnt have the £5000 budget for the engine but.....)Ive got to try and draw the line somewhere with this bloody engine but I think id be better off with efi (and maybe twin plugging........)

Trust me, I know the budget constraints all too well.

I don't know if I would like their little programming interface, it seems kind of cumbersome. With my TEC3 I know its pretty cool to hook the laptop up to it and see everything at once, which you really won't be able to do with the SDS system. It just makes it easier to diagnose the whole system when you can see everything that is going on, and Autronics, DTA, etc has the same capabilities.

But I hear you loud and clear, the price can continue to climb, I know that mine did, but I have a great running engine with lots of power so that makes me glad I spent the money.

Everybody has their own factors that they take into consideration when doing a project like this, so noone can say that you are right or wrong, you are making the best decision for you.

Don't forget the price of the ECU is only part of the picture. You still need an intake system, fuel lines, injectors, crank sensor, cam sensor, temp sensor, air temp sensor, idle valve, air filter, coils and all the new wiring... these parts alone add up fast.

adomakin 11-13-2004 09:34 AM

Magic, the SDS EFI kit that im looking at comes with the following:
ECU
LCD programmer
Air temp sensor
CHT sensor
Main wiring harness
Injector harness
Fuel trim control
Crank sensor
Timing magnets
Coil/amp units

All for about $1500

the other bits that im told that i will need are as follows:
Fuel injectors
Fuel pressure regulator
Fuel rail
Fuel pump
Fuel return line from regulator to fuel tank
Throttle body
Carrera inlet manifold

so it does come with a lot of the parts that you mention, but i am aware that there is more to buy then just the ecu (unfortunately!)

afterburn 549 11-13-2004 02:31 PM

That sounds about right (according to the SDS rep out here) with the injectors-420 cc , new fuel pump, 7 mixture meters with heated sensor and bosses, additional coil pack, 3 bar map sensor and some other stuff to do turbo conversion comes to 2685.00 us dollars according to Kirk in Spokane, washington state usa.
Rich Clewitt says 3000.00 to get ya sort of at the assy stage for teck 3......................If I were that rich I would have a Italian car..

magic930 11-13-2004 03:32 PM

Don't forget that if you go with a carrera manifold that a stock intercooler does not fit.

adomakin 11-14-2004 01:51 AM

afterburn, whats the 'seven mixture meters' bit for?
magic, i would like a bespoke intercooler but fortunately i have a freiend who can help me with that bit. actually, its that very bit tht im not sure what to do with as im going to be running a ducktail so at the moment ive resigned myself to just removing whatevr part of the ducktail thats in the way in order to get it to fit! should look em, interesting! at least people will know not to mess!

Wayne, Megaquirt does have a integrated spark system. Its called Squirtn'Spark. Its fully programmable and can be used with coil packs and dist. or the Ford EDIS system.

ChrisBennet 11-14-2004 07:11 AM

Megasquirt is working on a new product called "Ultramegasquirt" that supports ignition. It isn't out yet but it's worth filing away for future reference or a future project.

Adomikin.......Sory read the list wrong,,was nu. 7 on the list....says "mixture meters with heated sensor bosses".......anyway the complete set up as far as he is concerned with SDS EM4 6f......2685.00$$........nothing else needed!

adomakin 11-14-2004 08:30 AM

now thats a tidy price for programmable efi!

adomakin 11-14-2004 08:31 AM

can I use the carrera fuel rails with the sds and just change the injectors?

Andy

afterburn 549 11-14-2004 01:01 PM

Dono.....you will have to ask SDS

Yes you can use the carrera rails... most injectors are "standard" sized. The boss in the manifold, and fuel rails are usually made to industry standards

if you need to build an ignition system figure:

400 for bracket and pickup
225 for coils
300 for ignitors

We sell the Haltech E6 for about 1450, this comes with all the sensors and an unterminated wiring harness, relays and fuses, you need to add coils, plug wire, and brackets for the pickup.

Yes. Just change injectors. You can buy them cheap from http://www.wmsracing.com/ or order it together with SDS.
You'll have to match-port Carrera plenum to 930 heads but it's just matter of manual work.

I believe it's best to order it complete from SDS all together. With coils, MAP, O2 sensor and whole sheebang...

afterburn 549 11-14-2004 03:54 PM

adomikin.....what ya going to use for a rear lid??(engine bonnet)

adomakin 11-15-2004 12:15 AM

Cheers for the advice tim but i think ill be going with the sds ignition.

Goran, Ive never done any port matching. i understand the process and ive always fancied giving it a go but..................should i just let the people who twin plug my heads do the work? is it that hard?

Afterburn, I want to use the ducktail. if it means cutting large chunks of it out in order to make it fit over the intercooler then thats what ill do. I quite like the idea actually and at leats ill will stop all the wannabes from trying their luck at the lights!

No, it's not hard at all but it takes few hours with dremel. Actually, you can even leave it as it is, it will work but you will loose few ponnies.

930 heads have "strangled" intakes...I believe they are 32mm wide....Carrera heads have 36mm intakes. It's a matter of removing the material from the intake until you have smooth transition.

If you want to be real anal you can saw off the intake runners just before they go into the head:

http://project911.luminasweden.com/l...N_IMG_0893.JPG

then bolt the stubs onto heads:

http://project911.luminasweden.com/l...N_IMG_0895.JPG

then port-match everything perfectly:

http://project911.luminasweden.com/l...N_IMG_0920.JPG

Then weld them back onto plenum:

http://project911.luminasweden.com/l.../TN_insug2.jpg

and port the weld-seam from inside as well:

http://project911.luminasweden.com/l.../TN_insug4.jpg

This is the very overkill way of doing it, but you get the point. Or you can do it the way most of people do, just marking the outline and dremeling it away. It's a job that doesn't require so much skill but patience and time, and that costs money if you let somobody else do it.

I'll try to find pictures of 930 / Carrera plenum.
