SDS efi...what are peoples views?
It looks like SDS efi would be the only option for me to go to efi (based on budget!) Im building a 3.3 turbo and would like to be able to run efi but its a completely new area for me. i have no knowledge of how to set up efi and after reading about SDS it seems like a nice, straightforward system. i was wondering if there is anyone who has used SDS that can shere there experiences.

Check into MegaSquirt: www.megasquirt.info if you haven't yet. It's basically free, you pay for the hardware.

Hi Andy, ive loked at megasquirt but it looks as if i would have to build up the ecu from components and make looms etc and I don't know if I want that level of involvment in the system. Im looking for something thats cheap, controlable and as easy to install/set up as possible as I am of very limited knowledge when it comes to efi! the car is only going to be ued on the street with a few track days thrown in (i hope) so i don't need an ultimate system, just something better than CIS.

If you look on Megasquirt's site they list a place that sells preassembled assembled kits.

Andy, you can buy a built controller box for a little over $300. Even with all the other parts it may be cheaper. Check out:
www.bitzracing.com for more info. |
The assembly isn't that bad, I just finished mine and I had no prior experience with soldering. The relay board will really make the set up much cleaner.
I also got the wiring harness pre-made from here: http://www.rs-autosport.com/ It is a nice set-up and he also has pre-assembled MegaSquirts for $249. |
thanks blokes, ill have another look at th megasquirt.

I have talked to the rep out here in spokane and he say for the buck there is not a better system +they race thirs!!...According to this guy you do not have to spend you next yrs wages on a dyno or get a lap top.....I think thats where i am headed also.
|
afterburn are you talking about the sds efi? also, I emailed tony at bitz racing and he reckons that his system don't work for the turbo because of the fuel rails. is this the only reason his system don't work? could i not use my own rail?
Andy |
SDS offers good bang for buck and has everything you need. I recomend it if you don't want to solder together Megasquirt.
There is also a support. It's canadian product but if canadian dollar is as weak as american it should be a good buy. You can buy MAP, injectors, coilpacks and EFI from SDS in one package. Are you going to use twin-plug? |
Andy:
Have you been on the Turbo911.com board? Lots of those guys have converted to EFI on their 930's. That's where I found the most useful info. Brian |
a fellow instructor that I drive with installed this system & was very happy with it. According to him, its simple to set up & use. One benefit he sees, contrary to most others, is that you can adjust it without a laptop. Its less flexible but more convenient unless you like lugging a laptop & accessory to the track. My read on that is: if you like to tinkle, this is probably not the system for you.
Here's a link to his car - http://www.sdsefi.com/features/jan03934.htm |
thanks guys. hobieboy i think your instructor mate has helped me make up my mind. It looks like hes got a very capable car with more than enough power. coupled up with the ignition capability and possible twin plugging its got to be the way forward for me. Goran, twin plugging would be nice (as Ive said in the past, my buget has been put in the bin so im sure ill convince myself that its needed!). has anyone any idea of the cost/parts involved in twin plugging? also what are the main benefits?
Andy |
If you are going EFI, incremental cost for twin plugging is not that bad - drill the lower valve cover, mod the head for the 2nd plug then add the ignition components.
The main benefit is reduced possibility of detonation. |
cheers for your help hobieboy

Adomikin,
SDS is fine for turbo.....least thats what the dude over there tells me and thats what we are savin $$for.....have had lots of speaks with them,,gave me the right ans. |
cheers afterburn, sds it is

Twin-plugging on SDS-equipped 911 motor is merely matter of buying a second row of coilpacks (I believe that coildpacks SDS is bundling together are GM product and thus quite cheap) and drilling/machining the holes for the plugs.
No unobtanium twin-row dizzys, no second ingition box, no nothing. Just a second row of coilpacks and actual plugs to connect them to. Twin coilpacks for 911 (Marc's car): http://www.sdsefi.com/features/9349.jpg SDS coilpacks connected to engine: http://www.sdsefi.com/features/grimm4.jpg If you are already going to use SDS ignition module then dual-plug is cheap bonus (as long as you can find somebody to machine your heads cheaply) |
Andy,
Good luck with the conversion & keep us posted :) |
cheers goran, hobieboy and co, ill keep you posted!
