getting started

Hi guys, just getting started on my first rebuild. Motor drop with no problems and down to the long block now. Hope to have it totally disassembled by the weekend. Wish me luck.

Thanks to Paul Harper (PHB) and Mike Dunn for the use of special tools and motor stand.

picture attached I hope

Joe

Looks like a good start. It looks like you're working on 73T motor, any upgrades planned?

I'm in the same boat, Joe. My 73E engine is disassembled and I'll be sending parts out soon to be machined. BTW, nice looking targa.

Tim, the plan is to put it back togethor stock at this point. If it needs pistions I may go higher compression and see where that takes me. I will need a new set of SSIs and a muffler TBD.

Thanks, Joe

Why is is that when I look at a Porsche engine out of a car, I can't help but admire it. Good luck and enjoy. And, document, document, document.

I just got a 1974 Targa and plan to start the same shortly. One question, how did you get the engine from the jack, assuming, up to the engine stan? Thanks.

Invite 3 or 4 friends over. That's how I did it.

Looks good Joe. Good luck on the rebuild.

Tom,

You can use a high lift jack and a two leg engine stand to get the engine on the stand. The only other choices I know of are a crain or a lot of friends. I don't have either of them, so I use the jack.

Good luck,

JP

Joe, you will have alot of enjoyment from the whole process. I went from this:

to this in a span of about 8 weeks:

Take your time and document the highs and lows of the process.

Throughly clean (and I mean completely clean out all oil and grit) the rocker arm shaft bores in the cam towers before removing the rocker arm shafts. Do not mar the bores removing the rocker arm shafts. Tag and bag everything; take notes and images if you can.

73.5T engine (black painted 73TMFI shroud) before:

73.5T engine and transmission after:
