Well worth it to check thermostat

As I was waiting for parts to come in (from something I broke but lets not talk about that), I decided to follow Waynes sugestion to check the engine case oil thermostat and I am glad I did.

I am replacing my 74' 2.7 with a 77' Carrera 3.0 and I did the thermostat check on the 3.0 unit and it did not open even at 250 degF (used engine oil in a pot over a stove eye). Then for chits and giggles, I checked the unit from the 2.7 and it also did not work. So another item was added to the shippment. When I got the new thermostat, I check it out and it worked just fine (probably did this more to make sure that my test was valid.)

In light of others saying on this forum that they have had this same failure and the impact of a failed thermostat, I would think that it is a real smart thing to check if you have got the engine out. The test is simple and obvious. Maybe there is an age failure of these items that is now starting to manifest itself.

Both my thermostats were bad. I bit the bullet and bought a new one at $80. Glad I did since the 964 replacement has huge ports.

Through my mechanic via worldpac. I'm 99% sure our host can get them as well, but I wanted mine the next day.
