I have a 72 T with a 71T engine with excessive oil consumption and a little smoke. I need to rebuild it but would like to add a little zip. It will principally be a street care so driveability is important. I have read Wayne's book and followed most of the 2.2 and 2.4 threads. Wayne's 2.2 to 2.4 upgrade appeals to me but may be a little over my head for my 1st porsche rebuild and a little too much in the $$$ dept.
Seriously considering a more simple? upgrade to a 2.2E. From what I've learned so far I will need E pistons, E cams and I'll need to have my distributor recurved. Have I missed anything (like cylinders, valves or heads?) Do my plans fit my requirements? Priority order 1. Cost 2. Relative ease of rebuild 3. driveability 4. More zip (please elicidate) I appreciate your advice!! |

I noticed you’re from Seattle. You might want to contact John Walker's shop over on Greenwood Avenue, I haven't had any work done by him, but he is on line here occasionally and seems to have a good reputation. I believe the cheapest thing to do would be to increase compression in the motor by getting new pistons. You can safely go to about 9.5:1 without twin plugging, other than that it will get expensive. A lot of what you do will depend on what condition your motor is when you take it apart.

I just rebuilt my '72T, and put 2.2L T pistons/cylinders into it. I felt the added compression might give me a little power for few dollars...and teh price was right on the P/C's. Did it...well, I can't say for sure since my original 2.4T was blown when I bought it. But I am pleased with the results. So, I guess you can add the 74.4mm stroke crank to your car. They can be had for not too much money. That would give you a high compression 2.4L T motor like myself. Basically, a little kick for very little cost over a stock rebuild.
