oil thermostat
I have a 1970 911t with a 2.2. Does anyone know what the adjustment screw on top of the oil thermostat is for?

As far as my knowledge goes it's for adjusting how far the pass through hole in the thermosat opens. Probably to adjust the amount of oil when reaching operating temperatures.

I believe it adjusts the temperature at which the thermostat opens. These thermostats work by the expansion of wax inside the thermostat unit, which pushes out a small pin. I think the pin bears on the end of this adjustable screw. If I have that upside down, then the pin bears on the end of the expansion unit, placing the unit closer or farther from the open (oil routed through the cooler) position. Either way, less excursion of the pin is required for the same amount of orfice opening. From this it follows that screwing the adjuster in ought to open the thermostat at a lower temperature.
I've got a couple of these in my parts box, but have never experimented because my SC runs the later stock non-adjustable unit, and the race motors don't use a thermostat. These are not all that hard to disassemble, if I recall rightly, because the thermostat part can be purchased separately. Walt Fricke |
