ot 356 engine rebuild
I am helping my dad do atop end on his 356 sc. Has anybody ever been into one of those before?? I have rebuilt several 911 engines and now the difference between cylinder coatings etc. Anybody know what coating I am dealing with on this 64 model?? Any hints on this would be good.
Thanks

Did you ask the Pelican 356 board?

I rebuilt my 69 912 engine which is much the same. are you doing the heads yourself or sending them out? The cylinders, on my 912 were alum with steel inserts, and known to crack often, no coating, a good replacement are solid steel cylinders 83 or 86mm and J&E pistons, The engine is a lot like working on the old VW's in some aspects.

are they the original 82.5mm bore Mahle cylinders. These have aluminium cooling fins and a steel insert like cgarr said. I believe the 356sc engine is the same as the 912 engine. Do you have the aliminium rocker assemblies?(these are unique to the sc's i believe). Your heads can be rebuilt by:
competition engineering http://competitioneng.com/ or 356 Enterpsises http://356enterprises.com/ both are top notch and i believe that 356 is in michigan and the other is in california. You could also probably do much of the head work yourself. Springs, shims, valve retainers and keepers, and valve guides should all be replaced. Valves could be replaced if they appear worn, be sure to get the soduim filled exhaust valves. And check for cracks in the combustion chamber around the spark plug hole as this is an area where cracks commonly develop. The rocker arms and assmembly could probably be reused, just check for excessive wear or pitting on the rocker faces. |

No it is not a carrera engine. it does not have steel inserts and they are mahle pistons. I am going to measure them up next week when I have more time. Heads are being locally (me) Sodiums for sure and it is a numbers matching 64 sc

See if you can get a copy of Harry Pellow's (The Maestro) books or video tapes on engine rebuilding. He's the expert, and the books/videos are good reads too...
