Teardown Day one: That's why it leaked
I tore into my first 911 engine today. Saving all hardware int baggies, and following wayne's book.
I started to take the 4,5,6 cam tower off and that's when I found what you are NOT supposed to do. Scribe the cylinder number with huge numbers into the mating surface. ![]() and then AGAIN on the cam tower... ![]() Amazing my car didn't leak gallons onto the street with that black stuff on there in a big bead. This is where my insane ticking came from. A fried rokcer and cam lobe from a blocked squirter... ![]() And lastly... Here is what an impact wrench can do to an adjusting flange.. Don't try this at home ![]() More later of course... Michael

Michael,
If you happen to need cam towers cams, or cam hardware for 1969T, I just happen to have a set. I disassembled a 69T years ago and still have that stuff in my attic. And I promise the cam towers weren't scribed like yours... They're yours for a very reasonable price. Send me a PM. |

Try JB weld on the cam nut, save a couple cents.

I forgot to tell you how that cam nut got liek that. After heating, liquid wrenching, correct tools, breaker bar, etc etc, I had to DRILL it in half to get it off the cam. IT was deformed around the cam somehow. After I even the split the cam nut it required a drift to knock the half piece off!
No, the butane torch did not weld it on. The funny ting is, that the liquid wrench had penetrated all the way through all of the threads. The po had just put so much torque on there. It must have been like 150lbs or more. Unreal. BK911 saw it with his own eyes. michael
