cam end play 3.2 / sprocket alignment
I am helping my friend put his top end together on a stock 3.2. We are at the cam sprocket to intermediate shaft alignment step and have torqued the bolts on the cams. There is considerable end play in both cams. We have not measured it, but it is beyond the .25mm for sure. Isn't the cam bolt supposed to take up the end play when torqued?
The cams have been reground and are parkerized. May the parkerized finish on the cam snout have avoided proper seating of the sprocket flanges? Any ideas? Am I correct in my assumption that there should be no noticeable end play? TIA, George |

He measured end play today and comes up with 0.12 and 0.09 mm. I swear it felt like more, but the indicator doesn't lie. I think this means that we can go ahead with the alignment, right?
Thanks, George |

I misplaced my Wayne book. Buddy picked up end play as .4 mm max. somewhere. Unsure if it was in Waynes' book or in his spec booklet. You are supposed to shove the cams and the intermediate shaft towards the flywheel, picking up the end play, accoding to Woods/Anderson and then measure alignment.
If the end play spec is indeed .4mm, there seems to be no reason to break a sweat at this point? George |

My Spec book for an 82/83 shows a wear limit of .4mm for camshaft axial play.

Walt:
Thanks for confirming the .4mm. This should not change between the late 3.0 and the 3.2, since their cams are both bolt style. I think we are all set then. Thanks again to all, George |

Unless I have completely missed something obvious....if I take shims out to move the gear in..the cam end play increases. the adjustments for cam end play and sprocket position are not independent.... very interesting. What is the situation on this..you I make a trand off when shimming the sprockets?
