Countershaft/Intermediate Shaft

Dumb question perhaps, but what is the difference between a 'countershaft' and an 'intermediate shaft'? Or are they just two names for the same thing?

Thanks.

Countershaft is a shaft placed usually in large displacement 4 cylinder engines to reduce harmonic vibrations. Our intermidiate shafts just connect the oil pump to a gear.

From the "Dictionary of Mechanical Engineering"; 4th Edition by G.H.F Nayler (available from SAE):

countershaft An intermediate shaft in a line of shafting placed between a driving and driven shaft to obtain a greater speed-ratio or where direct connection is difficult. See also gear cluster; layshaft.
