2.4T MFI Rebuild/Upgrade questions
Hi,
I have a stock '72T 2.4 MFI that has developed a knock or at the very least seems to do 0-60 in 15-20 seconds, and no noticeable torque. What is the best, economical rebuild/upgrade for this setup? I'd like to keep the MFI system. The Pcar will only be used for spirited driving around town, probably no autocross or DEs anytime soon. I'd like to get more torque and more HP....maybe 200, give or take 10-15 HP? Keep in mind that I won't be doing any of the work myself. (two infants) I've done a search and the 2.7RS Spec with MFI seems to be the way to go. I am open to suggestions. What mods are necessary from the 2.4T setup to 2.7RS Spec? Does anyone know a ballpark figure this might cost? Anyone willing to take on this project? I am in Chicago. Thanks

Jay Auskalnis (chicagoan) may chime in... he recently rebuilt his T motor. you may want to PM him.
As for the cost... I suspect that the two infants you are offering up in trade will not be enough to get you up to an RS spec motor. ![]()

Do a search on 2.4t, or on my name, dtw or tsyon schmit we've all done it and have posted all the ins and outs of a 2.4T upgrade.

Hi DKM,
I am beginning rebuild process of a 2.4T too. If you want, we can share experiences. I gues I will go for something similar to 2.4s 190hp engine or totally stock 140hp one. Regards, Fernando.

If you plan on staying at 2.4L then the only mod I would suggest would be a bump in compression to 9.8:1. This will give you added torque for street driving. If budget allows however a bump in displacement to 2.7 or even 2.8 would be even better.
I recently rebuilt my 2.4T stock and it's a great motor for the street. Anything hotter cam wise is counter productive in my opinion for the street when limited to 2.4L

Thanks for all the replys. I took the car for another ride today and I realized that the reason why it was running "doggy" was because the throttle was stuck about 1/3 to the floor. ( I thought it was the hitting the floor) I may still have to rebuild/upgrade, but first I have to get the throttle unstuck.

You should only start a rebuild if the numbers indicate that it's needed. i.e. compression test, low oil pressure or something like a rod knock.
What was the knock you mentioned?

A well running 2.4T engine is a pretty nice street engine. I'd go through the engine and adjust the valves and verify/set cam timing. Then I'd go through the check measure and adjust manual and verify the engine is in perfect tune. See how she runs after all that, then decide if you still want to tear down.
