Early Carrera 3.0 case w/ 66mm crank ????
I'm thinking about building an early carrera (ROW 3.0L) aluminum crankcase with a 66mm "s" forged crank. First of all, what rods would I use with this combination, and second of all do you have any thoughts or recommendations on the cams/pistons to use with this? Does anyone know of a person who's built one of these? Thanks!

This is my favorite engine. For many reasons I've stated before I believe the is combination (95 X 66) is the best engine Porsche never built.
The rods you should use are the 2.2 rods. 2.0 rods will work but the 2.2 rods are a later design and are much stronger. As for cams and pistons, I would need more information about the your driving habits and purposed use before recommending compression ratio and cam profiles, but please remember this combination is a high revving engine so lean towards a more aggressive cam because low end torque is not this engines forte'. The twin plug, slide valve 2.8 engine on our web site is a 9.5 to 1 (95 mm Cosworth racing piston for a 70.4 crank) and RSR sprint cams. It make 315 hp on street gas and idles like a Toyota. There are a few tricks to building this engine you won't find in any book so call me and we'll talk.

Henry,
This will be a 50/50 street / DE car. I want a high-revving motor in keeping with the early 911 style as opposed to a torquey 3.2L conversion. Will a 911S cam be enough with the extra displacement or will I need a hotter cam? I'm planning on probably doing a twin-plug as I'm sure by the time I have the $$ to assemble this someone will have developed a cost-effective means of ignition. That being said, compression is open, probably somewhere north of 10:1-11:1. I plan on running headers and a sport muffler, it will be a summer only car so there will be no need for heat. I plan on running weber carbs more than likely unless I find an EFI system I like better. Bill, no I didn't win the lottery, I'm just planning on getting in way over my head like we all do! :-)

Elgin DC60 or Web 120/104 would be my cam choices and 10.4 compression, 40 mm in ports 38mm ex and 46 mm PMO's. 280 + hp and still street drivable.
Cheers

Thanks for your input Henry. That's exactly what I was hoping to hear. I am shooting for no more than 2,100 lbs. when my car is complete so 280 hp would provide a nice form of motivation!
