Alusil options?

OK, what are the options (other than $2400 new cyls and pistons)? 140000 mile motor, cheap top 25000 miles ago, burns (not leaks) about 1 qt in 400-600 miles, 96% all six. Engine on stand and about to be cleaned up with new airbox and CIS inspection, SSI install on a 3.0 79SC currently in the paint shop.

The bottomline? Re-ringing Alusil is a crapshoot - it may or may not work. Walt's suggestion is what he has learned from past experience...
From Wayne:( :D

I'd either keep the old rings or send out the cylinders for coating and buy new pistons.

John,

JE pistons and Nikasil coating the cylinders is another option, about $1800 through EBS.

There is also a local shop here in Falls Church that has the correct Sunnen machine and paste to 'recondition' your Alucil C's. Just make sure P/C's are in spec before.

Send me a PM and I can get you their info.

An ending worth sending? I pulled the CIS and exhaust and took a good look at the engine. Did a leak down. Results were 96 to 98%. Cylinder walls showed no cross trama. Valves guides installed 10000 miles ago without new valves showed some oil leaking. No major leaks around cylinders so... I decided to put her back in the car and run her until she gets sick. She is a 140,000 mile engine, is in typical shape for her age, and like any other old girl has some good miles left in her before Botox!!!
