Engine build critique

Hey Guys. I'm in the planning stages of building my 82 3.0

engine.My thoughts at this point....

Andial Hi comp. 3.3 jugs.
Dual plug conversion.
Pat Williams Racing CIS to EFI conversion( This kit is under development for naturally aspirated engines).
964 cams
SSI heat exchangers.
All this plus a sound rebuild.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Dan

Just my $.02:

Andial Hi comp. 3.3 jugs: Displacement upgrade, awesome! 10.5 CR max if you are planning on using 93-octane pump with dual plugs.

Pat Williams Racing CIS to EFI conversion - If using single plenum, I'm sure it would be better than CIS due to the tunablity factor alone, but throttle response would not be anywhere close to Webbers or individual TB EFI. Depending on the price of this conversion, maybe a decent set of Weber 40's would be a better idea and you can also use more aggressive cams (pending piston dome shape) with carbs or ITB EFI.

964 cams - Great cams for stock compression ratio, CIS injection and funky CIS/Motronic pistons. If keeping CIS or single plenum EFI, the compression ratio on the 3.3's are probably pretty high (needs dual plugs) so you can probably use something a bit more aggressive like the webcam 20/21 or Camgrinder can hook you up with something similar. Depending on the piston shape (large valve cut outs) and injection (carbs) you can probably run something pretty hot like a Mod-S type cam for some good fun.

SSI heat exchangers - Marginal with 3.2 running stock cams/injection. You may want larger diameter headers for your 3.3, especially if you are going to be running aggressive cams.

Hopefully others will chime in......

you will want to open up your ports a little even with the configuration you described. If you are using a shared intake manifold (single throttle body) you could probably go to a 993SS type cam, talk to "camgrinder" on this board. If the efi is an individual throttle body deal you could go for a Mod-S type cam like Charlie mentioned.

Had a hunch the cams and SSI's were marginal. I'll have the SSI.s up for sale shortly, along with other parts. I'm probably going to stay with the PWR EFI system(when and if it comes available). The 930 efi system added about 40 hp over the cis(about %13).That should be good for 20hp or so in my build. Keep the ideas flowing. Thanks .Dan

Talk to John Dougherty, www.drcamshafts.com he will help you determine what cams you need, and that may determine whether you can use your SSIs. I know several guys who use SSIs with 964 cams on a short stroke 3.2 (70.4x98)
