Yet another timing question

Hi guys,

While I'm not new to the forum (been reading for quite some time now) this is my first post, so please be gentle. I have both Wayne's Engine Rebuild Book and 101 Projects and have read the section on engine timing and Project 15 on timing. I've also searched through 8 pages of various threads on timing cams.

I had hoped my first post to the forum would be after I'd gotten my motor back into the car and got it running again... I must be an optimist.

Here's what I have. Doing a partial engine rebuild on a '79 SC, stock motor with the exception that I had the cams ground to the 964 profile. According to Appendix A in Wayne's book, the intake lift I'm looking for when setting #1 is 1.26mm or .4925"

I set the both cams with the 930's up, move the crank pulley to Z1 and start to turn the pulley. The gauge doesn't move for a while through the rotation (as it says in the book), but by the time I get back around to Z1, I have less than half of the lift that's supposed to register on the gauge. I've tried resetting the gauge to zero and removing the pin and returning the cam so 930 is upright (thinking maybe I don't have the crank TDC#1, and still no love.

I know I've been at this rebuild project for too long and that I'm missing something simple and I think I have a decent grasp of the concept of timing, but what am I missing here? What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

T.

Well, persistence does indeed payoff. Took some time away from the project, read and re-read the directions and viola... Got both 1 and 4 timed within tolerances.
