Hylomar Sealant
I am looking for an alternative to Curil T, and I have come across Hylomar in several forms, a Spray, a paint on liguid, a Tube of Hylomar Blue and Permatex Hylomar HPF. Can anyone comment about the best form of Hylomar. I am looking to seal the copper cylinder base gaskets, Cam Housings and Chain Housings. (I have also found a threebond supplier if that helps)
Steve

Bird. It's the word...

Steve, I used the Hylomar Blue in the jar with the brush (but I didn't use the supplied brush - used a few high quality art brushes). I used it on the copper base seals - no problems and no leaks.

Thanks John,
I am about to reassemble the top end, as the heads are now back from the machine shop. What sealant did you use for the cam towers and chain housings? Steve

I used the hylomar in the can on my base gaskets with no leaks (knock on wood of course).
I've been using the stuff for years on gas turbines, it was developed for rolls royce jet engines. It's limited in temperature range but works great on the bearing housings and such. I used a loctite product on my cam towers, can't remember the number right now but it was not an RTV derivative. It's something I use in the machine industry to seal machined surfaces. Even though I went against the grain and ignored the consensus of what should be used, my engine does not leak any oil at all and hasn't since I went through it. I probably got lucky. |

Thanks guys,
I am now intending to use the stuff in the can for the copper base gaskets and the tube of hylomar blue for the cam towers and chain housings. Steve

Use it wherever there is movement from heat expansion, like the cylinders base gaskets, case through-bolt o-rings, oil return tube o-rings, and chain housing to cam thrust-plate o-rings.

Thanks for the timely post Tyson,
I will use Threebond 1211 for the Cam housing to Cylinder Head and Hylomar for the cylinder base gaskets. Steve

I have just finished the long block and I agree. I wasn't too happy with the way the hylomar went on, it didn't spread very well. The Threebond was great easy to apply and I'm confident that I have a good seal.
I'll let you know how it goes when I start the engine in a week or so.
