Just getting Started - Engine Stand Question
Hi! I'm just getting started and want to get the right equipment.
Do I need both the OTC engine Stand and the P201 mount, or is the OTC Stand adequate by iteself? I have read Wayne's book once, and will do it again before getting started. The information here is invaluable. Thanks

Is the universal adapter part of the OTC stand?
Does the P201 work with the OTC stand? Thanks

Do a search on engine stands. The subject has been beat to death, trampled upon, and then beat to death again and again.

Dadofour,
DTM, right? We met at Limerock last year. When I am done with my rebuild, you can use my stuff (P201 nad 1250lb stand.) Some older stands do not have a large enough receptor for the P201. You have a PM with my email and cell. Tony |

I used the proper Yoke but installed it into a cheep Auto Parts store stand. After looking at the setup I decided to pay the extra money for the OTC 4 wheel stand that has the U shaped legs. By having the middle of the stand opened I can slip my DK 20Q 4400lb Floor Jack (from pelican of course) right under the stand and lift the engine off. This eliminates the need for an engine crane. The nice thing about the AC jack is that it has a very high lift (needed to reach the motor on the stand). The stand cost around $150 I think. It is very heavy duty and well constructed. The jack may seam a little pricy but trust me, it is well worth the money. It is a very nice addition top the garage.

If you are DIY type and can weld, you can make one up in short fashion. This one features bent 1/2 plates that contact the case surface. It does not allow you split the case, but once you are down that far weight wise, it would probably be ok.
It is mounted to a cheapo engine stand. You will want to fashion up a drip pan also. These cheap stands are rated to 750 lbs, but I fashioned a wood post underneath until I stripped some weight off in the teardown just for insurance. It is tough to justify spending $300-$500 for something you plan on using once ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I know that it is not politically correct, but I just rebuilt my 3.3 turbo on a universal stand mount with a couple of 1/4" aluminium spacers to protect the transmission lip. I know I should have used a P201 but being on the other side of the planet I had to make do. My fully dressed 930 turbo motor was on it for a few weeks. (I would not have attempted it with a mag case). Just because I got away with it doesn't mean that others will, so I am not advocating it. I can post a pic if you like.

Hi
I did it with a universal stand with some large washers as spacers (some cut in half to protect the lip) on a 2.4 7R, Its all you really need to distribute the load where the bolts go. I'd probably do something a little better next time, probable fabricate some 'feet' to fit other the U stand tubes HTH Neven |

For those who don't get away with it, there is always time certs, case welding, to fix almost any problem.

Jack
Its hardly a case of 'getting away with it', after all these bolts hold the same load if not more when the engines in the car, The only damage I could see being done is dinging the transmission mating lip Neven |

Nah, The only difference would be that when up the right way the bottom bolts are in tension on the stand and the top bolt in the car. There is no 'torsional' load on the bolts, a minor amount of shear due to the engine torque (if thats what you mean). What you have to consider is that on the stand the bolts support the engine, in the car the support half the engine mass (as it is on the stand as the engine is supported at the front in the car) but also the half gearbox mass. Someone may have calculated these 'static' loads but I think you'll find they are very small in comparison to the strength of the bolts Neven I can draw a picture and |
