Rebuilt my first motor, more to come.
Well I am working at a shop here in Pasadena and I just rebuilt my first motor, top end job and replaced main seals and I love this stuff!! Tomorrow I am dropping a non intercooled turbo motor and starting in on another three liter. Hopefully in the afternoon I can drop the motor out of an original 74 Carrera Targa S. Building all these motors is really getting me stoked about building the one for my car but there are so many ideas running around in my head I cant settle on one. How odd.
Anyways aside from being totally stoked that the owner came back half an hour later with a case of beer and tons of praise I just loved putting hundreds of pieces of metal together, added spark, air and gas and made a lump of metal move a car. It was one of the most exciting feelings I have had and I am sure things will move a lot faster and effieciently now that I know a couple shortcuts. I finally find a donor motor for my car and I just want to strip it all down and send parts off to the machine shop and get the custom P's and C's and start cranking. Maybe a little OT, maybe it should be main forum but I love building motors!!!

Been messing around with machines and motors over forty years. I still find the joy in making them work.

Ryder - for whom are you building these motors? Non-inter-cooled turbo, huh? Is it a 3.0? Sweet!

Hey Dave, I am working at a shop here in Pasadena, the same guy that my dad bought his 911 from. It is pretty cool stuff, kind of like an apprenticeship while I take some time off of school because we go year round. It's called Strictly German and I love it because all I work on is Porsches. The non intercooled turbo motor is a transplant from an early turbo car into 74 I believe. I leaks oil like no other so I am going to tear it down and reseal the case and build it back up, most likely put an intercooler on it as well.
After I am done doing all these customer cars I think we are going to start 3 shop project motors, one for my dad's car, one for my car and one for one of my boss' cars. I am loving it though, learning a ton, taking it slow so as to make no mistakes and learning from someone who really know's his stuff. So its another 3.0 this week, then the turbo, then a 2.7 motor from a 74 carrera s with factory ducktail in FG with a steel base, so sweet looking. Anyways, I think my car will end up at Kevin's by the end of the month so I can start getting it ready for paint! Hope to see ya soon. Ryder

Well, now I know who to take my motor to when I need a rebuild -- well, that is if Tyson embarks on his acting career. Of course, unless the turbo guy wants to sell his 3.0 whoosher...

I could take that 3.0 of yours and build it into something pretty fun I bet. A 3.0 will be the basis of my motor and I have plenty of ideas and have done plenty of homework on the topic. I do have to say that the hourly rates are pretty awesome, I will see ya soon Dave, gotta get back to my car in the garage!
