I thought it ran alright.
Finally have my engine together again and running thanks to Wayne and his book and the many contributers to this forum! I wouldn't have attempted it otherwise.
I finally put a timing light on it today and although it was idling smooth and evenly the timing showed to be quite a bit off. As I adjusted the distributor the engine progressively ran worse. With the timing set at idle, it is backfiring horribly. Could this mean that my cam timing is off? If it is a carb issue(rebuilt but not set up and balanced yet) than why would it idle smooth and even in the first place? I originally set the cam timing to 2.4 to 2.8 as per the spec in the book for engine model 911/51/61. My model is 911/57 (no spec given)which is euro with carbs not FI.Could this discrepency be my problem? I cant seem to find another spec. Your thoughts are welcomed. thanks Clarence

What was the cam timing before you took it apart?

Check your firing order, make sure now that the plugs aren't fouled. If they are get a new set and start over. Is your timing light on #1? Do you have any vacuum leaks? Try the simple checks first.

Thanks for the replies.I didn't check the cam timing values before disassembly and in hindsight it would have helped at this point. The plugs were brand new yesterday as well as cap and rotor. I will pull the plugs and also check for vacuum leaks. The firing order I have gone over and over and over. The timing light was definitely on #1
