Angry oops it went the wrong way

OK so I have the engine and tranny out to redo the clutch while it is out I decided to adjust the valves, this is the first time. I had already turned the engine back wards about a turn trying to get it to tdc when i read the next step in the directions that says only turn it clockwise. I'm hoping i didn't screw anything up. what gets damaged if the engine is rotated counterclockwise?

I believe the problem is the chain tensioner doesn't work when you run in reversed, so you lose valve timing. If you didn't force it the engine should be fine. I think.

In case your vehicle is a 912 it's easier to adjust valves counter clockwise, in that way you start at no.1 then 4, 3 and finally 2. you don't have to swap from side to side. Neat hey! but you don't have a 912 do you?
