Test running an Engine without a CDI?
I have an 2.2T and am ready to fire this sucker up after a long winter
The bad news is my HI-6 is dead and I would like to test run the engine to set the timing and adjust the carbs before I install the engine in the car. Can the car run without the CDI unit like a TYPE IV 4cyl car does? Maybe some education on why a CDI unit is needed. Anyone deal with Crane factory on repairing a unit?

You can run the engine off just the points and coil, but you need to rewire so the CDI is bypassed. You need the CDI for the hotter spark as just points and coil will foul the plugs quickly.

I'm not sure you can use the stock coil. The stock coil is not designed to work off of 12V. I used a coil from a 914 for a couple of weeks while I was waiting for my 'new' CD box.
