Gear ratios
what gear ratios would you guys recomend for my 2.7 carburated 914 - 6. The box is a 901 and the diff is stock 914-4 for 73. I plan on driving the car on the street as well as autocross and track days so i looking for some balance to the ratios. Currently the gears are as follows A, F, L,O,V. I don't like the higher RPM IN 5TH for highway cruising. about 62 mph @ 4000. I know the gears are suited for auto crossing.

Let's see here . .. . V gets you 62 mph @ 4000 rpm, it is a 27/25, or .93 slight overdrive. Are you using a small tire with like a 20" diameter? That's the only way V would give you 62 mph at 4K, with a stock 7/27 ring and pinion.
Anyway, how about a ZA fifth? That would give you 77 mph with the same combo.

A, F, M, S, X.
All around best 914/6 gearing for street with a 6800 RPM engine. They are stock/ production gears so there is no sticker shock when it comes to purchasing this combo. I have used this gear box on street 2.4- 2.7 for 20 years. It is the gearing I use in my 2.7 RS spec w/ solex carbs. in my 914/6 Couldn't be happier. Call and I'll quote a price for these gears. (trade ?)

The stock 4 banger 901 gears are too short for a 6 cyl (7100 rpm or so) engine at AX. First is good for about 60 feet (useless except for starts), 2nd is good for about 58 mph with a 22.5 inch dia rear tire....I spend waay to much time on the rev limiter.
Most AXs are run in 2nd as they are set up for less than 60 mph *in an average car*....a 2.7L in a 914 is not average ![]() As I see it, you would want to slightly higher speed in the lower gears than what you will need....say 45 in first & 65 in 2nd. To that end, I've found a "B" 1st ....not easy to find, and a 904 mainshaft is on the purchase list along with something between G & H for 2nd depending on availability. Mine is an AX only car, but I can't see where this would hurt on either the street or track.

I like most of my gears.. they help me move forward.. anyhoo: I digress: MSX is a nice package for long track: Summit,The Glen, CMP Roebling I cant recommend gears for many tracks west of the mississippi and K,Q,V works well on shorter tracks.
