Cool Adding an engine oil cooler on 3.6

Hi Gang

I'm fairly new to the forum so excuse me if I cover old material. I did a search without success.

Here are my questions: I am installing a 964 3.6 in a 78 SC for a friend who is a very clever machinist. He was looking over the engine and feels that the factory cooler on the 3.2 and earlier can be installed in it's usual place with a little work. Has anyone done this? If so, what do we need to look out for? Also, when we do this, we loose the oil temp and oil pressure senders which were moved to the thermostat location on the 3.6. It looks like the oil tensioner plastic oil feed piece could be replaced with a custom made piece and add an oil pressure port. Anyone know if there is a spring or anything in that plastic piece that routes oil from the chain cover to the oil squirter on the cam? If you have other thoughts or cautions, please let me know. BTW, we do know that we need to modify the protruding cam, the tins and the air flow ducting to the cooler. We'll probably eliminate the oil return line on the cooler and use the threaded 964 connection. Thanks a bunch

Jerry:

Without question, one can install the factory cooler on the 3.6 but I MUST tell you that having that nice pressure-side oil filter is really really nice. We simply install two front oil coolers to control temperatures,...

That filter has saved several engines from major damage and IMHO is much more valuable for what it does.

A related question I have a 90 964 engine without a pressure side filter. I have it installed in an 80 with 2 front Carrera coolers . Can I install the engine mounted pressure side filter? If so. Do you want to get rid of your associated parts?

Yes, you can. i would try to use the angled turbo version rather than the vertical n/a version. It will make oil changes a bit easier.
