Oil level in crankcase after shutdown
I have a 964 that I performed a complete rebuild on last winter. I just changed the oil and was a little surprised at the amount of oil that drained from the crankcase after the car had only sat for an hour or so. I've owned this car for many years so I've come to expect a certain amount of oil in the drain pan when I empty the crankcase--I've never actually measured it but I usually have enough capacity left to hold 4 or so quarts from my other car. I drain the oil tank into a separate container.
I always pre-measure the amount of oil before I fill it back up so I'm confident that I did not overfill. What would be the expected amount of oil in the crankcase? -doug |

Rough guess? About 3 to 4 quarts come out of the crankcase in my SC, but that's after sitting all night.

I'm not sure about the 964s but the earlier cars can have a wide variation in the crankcase depending on how long it's been sitting. If you drain it right after shutdown it will have only a couple of quarts. If you leave it for more than a few hours it might have 7 or so quarts. My 72 pretty much drains the entire tank into the case after 24 hours.
