Machinst recommended "new" place to clean
I went to a Rich Jacksic (local porsche engine machinist) to have the engine parts I bought on Pelican measured and checked out.
He made a suggestion that I had not read or seen online so I thought I would share it. If it has been shared in the past, sorry in advance. Rich recommended I clean the inside of the Intermediate Gear. He said it acts like a centrifuge. The oil in the gear is spun and the crap sticks to the inner wall. No need to contaminate the engine oil after all the cleaning I have done! To get the inside clean you have to remove the snap ring http://www.dtmotorsports.com/~dadofo...nterShaft1.JPG http://www.dtmotorsports.com/~dadofo...nterShaft2.JPG You then just have to screw a 6mm bolt in and gently remove the plug by hand. http://www.dtmotorsports.com/~dadofo...nterShaft3.JPG http://www.dtmotorsports.com/~dadofo...nterShaft4.JPG http://www.dtmotorsports.com/~dadofo...nterShaft5.JPG I took these pictures after soaked the inside with Mineral Spirits and then squirted a decent amount of brake cleaner in until the run off was clear instead of black. |
Can't be too clean! Though I'm pretty sure it's in "the book", no not Bruce's, the other one, Wayne's Engine rebuilding book;) It certainly can't hurt to remind everyone.

I feel foolish. Did not remember it from the "Inspection" section.
Sorry I ever doubted you Wayne :( |
No need to feel foolish! You documented it step by step with great pics, this is an important cleaning step:)
