@L Race engine..FIA spec.

Hello gurus.

I have never done a pukka FIA engine....and need guidance please.

Of course it must use Solex Carbs, and I'm guessing also the original 1965 valve sizes...

But I think high comptression pistons, and hotter cams...and exhaust, oiling mods ( squirters, SC oil pump, drilled crank for centre oiling, are all probably OK.

But I'm really hoping someone round here has been there and done that and is prepared to share their knowledge..

So, what should I be designing please?

Kind regards
David

Even before that, what do the preparation rules say? What sort of car are you starting from? Do you have a copy of the Porsche Competition Preparation booklet? That pretty well defines how Porsche prepared the 911 for racing back in the late 60's and early 70's. If you're starting with a '65 car, I'd suggest maybe going back and starting with a slightly later chassis for two reasons.

1) '65 911 chassis are awfully few and far between, both originally and even more so now. If you're going to be racing, you really want something that's a bit consumable.

2) Back in '65 Porsche wasn't really racing the 911's, only rallying them. Even in that case, the preparation was pretty mild and so it's really not going to be much more then a street spec 911 with a noisy exhaust and bucket seats.

BTW, it helps to fill in your signature with your car and your avitor with your location so that we have some reference.

2L FIA engine

Thanks, Guys.

Yes, the FIA Appendix K reules are pretty restricted, to the Homologated Spec for 1965...

However, In practical terms:

The Chassis can nowadays be anything at all..provided it is "to period specification for 1965".

Previously, only original 1965 cars were admitted..hence their premium price..

ie any SWB 911 or 912 chassis..or even, at a pinch, a later chassis backdated..

I do not have the Porsche booklet..as you say this would form a good giude..is it on the net somewhere?

Kind regards
David

The other option would be to build yourself a 911R, although that was never technically homologated as a GT if my memory is correct. This is why it never really raced widely in any FIA series like the S's (or ST or T/S or whatever) did.

BTW, I sent you an email.

PS: I tried scanning in my copy of the Competition Preparation manual, but it was too feint to be useful.
