Cams
I have recently pulled my engine out of my 71 targa and found that I dont have the factory 2.2 or 901 gearbox but instead a 2.4 w/ a 915 gearbox!.. WHAT LUCK!.....
anyhow, I have read many articles on how to get the cam chain and sprockets off, but still I cant seem to figure it out. HOW hv you held the cam in place in order to loosen the LARGE nut on the end? Other question.. When reinstalling the cam sprockets and chain... How or what is the proper chain tension and how is this checked? Thanks Mitch

There is a tool that grabs the flats on the cam. It's available from all the mail order places and I assume Pelican. It's a socket shaped to go over the end of the cam. You use a crowsfoot socket on the big nut. That's available too. The crowsfoot was more expensive of the two I think.

As Andy pointed out this requires the special tools he discribed. I wouldn't try this job without them or you'll end up hurting yourself or the motor.
Chain tension is automatically set by the tensioners. If you have the original tensioners then this would be a good time to upgrade to Carrera tensioners or atleast rebuild the tensioners you have unless they have recently been rebuilt. Before you do anything I would suggest you by Waynes rebuild book. It will show you all the steps you need to take to change your cams. One more thing. The pistons have to have deep enough pockets for the cams being used. In otherwords you can't install a "wilder" cam with T pistons unless you either deepen the valve pockets or raise the deck height. Raising deck height is not a good way to make clearance by the way. It lowers compression.
