2.7l Mag case ALLOY replacement

Doing my rebuild on my 2.7l, I want to go to an Alloy case?

what are my options can I use a 3.0l case?

blue72s 12-17-2005 04:46 PM

Either the early 2.0 sand-cast alu case or the very rare 2.7 Silumin case.

Practically speaking. the 2.0 Al case is the only real-world option.

I've only see one 7R Aluminum case in the past 33+ years. :)

Matt,

What's the problem with your existing case?

Good Alum cases are getting harder to find as time passes. To make them work for a 2.7 requires a lot of work. Why wouldn't you just perform whatever work is necessary on your Mag case?

Mark.

I agree that the 2.7 case will be probably less costly and better (lighter, more original, etc.) in the long run....what are you building? Adding case-savers to it will work well for almost any normally-aspirated 2.5-2.9 engine. If you are going to build a small-displacement turbo car or something of that nature (12.5:1 C/R?), that is probably when you should start looking for an early alu case.

No problem with existing I just was'nt sure the mag case last

For a full up race motor the Mag cases are weak. If you're car is primarily for the street and you keep to the 7200 RPM limit the case will last for many years if it has been prepared properly.

matt

another thing to keep in mind is that non-original case material will disqualify the car from a bunch of motorsport events in australia (eg. targa tas). something to keep in mind if you ever decide to sell the car as you may lose potential buyers and/or lessen value.

Yeak you guys hve made my mind up, I'll stick with mag case

He hasn/t stated that he is doing motosport so if it is just a daily driver then I would go the path of capacity increase.

Michael,

This is sort of a continuation of other threads Matt has posted recently where he has stated his preference for the 'Zing' of a 2.7 over the 'Grunt' of a larger engine...
