Which Oil Pump?
Still very much in parts collection mode....just wondering what oil pump I should use for my engine. Chassis is an '89 Carrera with 6 speed G50 transmission.
Basis is a new '84 case (930 101 108 6R), 74.4mm crankshaft and 98mm p/c's. I'll be using TWM Weber throttle bodies, SSI's (need the heat) and heads from my Euro '79 SC engine. Engine management will be likely TEC3, twin plugged (I am going to use CoP....I hate spark plug wires). Engine displacement will end up as 3.4 litres, tuned for street/touring use Anyway, I have a new Carrera oil pump (911 107 008 05) and was wondering whether it would be excellent for this engine or should I upgrade to the Turbo oil pump or the 964 oil pump? I tend to be very conservative on things like that, considering this will be the last car I ever rebuild....don't want to have to fix it down the road... If the concensus is to upgrade, I'll have a new Carrera pump for sale if anyone is interested! Plus of course I will be pulling the factory steel/dilavar studs off the case and replacing them with Raceware stuff... Opinions? Dennis ![]()

Not sure if it needs a case modification or not, but I think the new pump to have is the GT3R. I think Henry Schmidt intalled one recently in Infrared's 965 rebuild.

Here ya go:
91 Turbo 3.4 rebuild begins of course you can't go wrong with the Turbo oil pump, either!

Yeah, I have been following that thread....certainly Henry is on my list for the rebuild!
I guess the question is whether I'd actually need to go that extreme (GT3R pump), or whether the current Carrera pump is going to be OK or is the 964 or Turbo pump is needed to ensure reliability for the long term. Dennis

Dennis:
We use GT3R pumps. These are less $$$ than Turbo pumps and both are FAR better than 964/993 or Carrera pumps when higher sustained RPM will be realized.

I'll take the Carrera oil pump if the price is right and what's with the Raceware studs. SUPERTEC head studs are far superior in design to every stud on the market. Of course that is just my slightly biased opinion.

I suppose I need to ask....Henry, if I send you the Carrera pump and the factory studs, how much money do I have to send to get a GT3R pump and Supertec studs?
My first born male child is at home at the moment (from university engineering) and is available for part compensation... Dennis

BTW - What is the anticipated rev range of the engine? Something being rev'd to 8000 RPM may require a different oil pump strategyg from an engine that is will spend it's whole life between 3000 and 6000 RPM.

Good point.....car will likely spend 80% of its time toodling along the street in Calgary, with the odd excursion to the highway or longer distance highway travel....

What sort of camshaft profile are you using?

Don't know yet, I have been reading Wayne's book like it was holy and probably will go with his recommendation .... namely S cams. I suspect that I'll hold off that decision until I have more of the parts and closer to the build....

Dennis:
If you do use "S" cams, your Carrera pump will be just fine and you don't need to spend any further monies.
