My 76 911S smokes after sitting 1 week

I have a 76 911S with about 68K miles on it. The engine is almost original. The only upgrade is the pop off valve. If I let the car sit for about a week, it smokes a lot for about 10 minutes when I first start it. Then it stops smoking and I don't see any more smoke. It passed the emissions test a few weeks ago.
After reading some of the posts here, I'm guessing it's the valve guides. Do you think I could just rebuild the top end ?
Should I do some upgrades at the same time, do a complete overhaul or try to find a good used newer engine ?
Any good suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

You don't need to rebuild your engine, you need to drive your car more. When your car sits the oil drains from the tank into the engine. The oil then seeps through the rings into the cylinders. When you start the engine the oil burns until it's gone.

What is your oil consumption? Until your oil consumption exceeds 1 quart per 800 miles your valve guides are still probably OK.

10 minutes is kind of excessive for the start-up oil smoke, is it really that long?

Is this a 2.7? Why not slap a 3.2 in there and sell me your smoking gun? http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/kao10.gif

Andy is right on except I would go as far to say don't even worry about digging into your engine until your oil consumption is more than 1 quart per 500 miles.

Mike:

Sorry to dig up an old thread but, my rebuilt '76 2.7L [rebuilt ~80-90k ago] does the same think with 160K on the odometer. Has gotten worse over time but total oil consumption isn't 1 quart per 500 miles. Mine is more like 1 quart every 800 miles.

Give us an update ... gotten better? worse? oil consumption?

TIA

Jason

Just picture 10 to 11 qts in the bottom of the engine at start up.......
