Pitting on cam's

I have two sets of cams to choose from to put in my 3.0.

the problem is they both have pitting on the exact same lobe..

so what is the solution? send them off to cam-grinder? are they usable?
is this a known problem. Kind of weird to have two sets that have identical pitting

i think you'll find that they are probably ok to use, there are other threads around that talk about this with similar pitting where others have ok'd them for re use.....

John (camgrinder) will probably comment but it seems this is a common issue on SC's. Mine had pitting, exactly like yours and I just got the cams back from John. He seemed to indicate most of them did habve issues...this car only had 75K, great service records...almost certainly not dirty oil.

i know if it was worn down you would be abe to feel a ridge where it rocker doesn't ride.. but no ridge...

thanks for the advice!

If you measure the lobe at the base circle, you will most likely find some lobe taper. Meaning the lobe is bigger in diameter closer to the bearing journal. This concentrates the pressure on a smaller area leading to this type of failure. Not a big deal to regrind. And yes I have seen a lot of these. Almost all were the 9301051477R cores.

I wouldnt recommend it, but if anyone does try to reuse a cam like that be sure to keep the rocker arms on the same lobes.
