Unless you had a problem prior to engine teardown, an inspection look-see (disassemble the pump) should be all that's needed. If you had a melt down catastrophic failure the pump may need further attention/ repairs.

Try the search feature here as there many well qualified shops that could do this for you that may be close to your area.

in the engine rebuild book it says not to take the pump apart do to the way the gears mesh. my motor did have a major failure not sure why but one of the rod bearings spun.

hillelson1,
Out of curiosity which bearing did you spin? I just completed a rebuild on my 78 930 after losing the #5 rod bearing.

A simple visual inspection of the gears will tell you a condition of the pump.
Clean it thorough with any solvent or if you are PC try Simple Green and warm water.
Dry with compressed air.
If the pump gears appear to be nick, chip and groove free and the pump turns easily with your finger tips then it is ok to use.
The pumps rarely wear out so if it doesn't swallow large amounts of debris it should last indefinitely.

Unfortunately, never did figure out why it failed. I had most of the work done by Bob Jones at Jones Autowerks in San Antonio, and he said that it was unusual to see #5 fail. Henry, any thoughts on this?

3.2 and 3.3 always seem to fail on number 5 cylinder.
I believe that the # 5 cylinder fails because it is the last rod bearing to get oil.
I try not to ask why most of the time because that question can drive you crazy.
Install good rod bolts and keep the RPMs under 7000 and the engines seem to last.

rod bearings

We have seen #2 & #5 fail on alot of 911's its like Henry stated the middle rods are the last to get oil, the crank oils from both ends to the middle, we prep the cranks with a cross drilled hole on the #4 main journal and machine a full groove in the bearing to feed the crank from the middle as well. Those mods have solved 99.9% of the mystery rod brg. issues.

Just to clear things up, you are not talking about turbo scavenge pump but main oil pump, right?

It's driven off the driver side camshaft.
