help removing alternator
 

How do I remove the alternator from its housing? This is a 66' 2.0. I've got the whole thing on the bench, and have removed the six nuts and washers. It looks like it should simply come out. Loosening the six screws only seems to separate the front half of the alternator. Any help greatly appreciated. Aloha, Jon

First remove the large nut, pulley and washers from the front of the fan. Then take the fan/shroud/alternator assembly and place it fan side down on two 4X4's. Position the 4x4's on the edges of the fan shroud so that they will not interfere with the fan blades. Tap on the edges of the back side of the fan hub using a hammer and a smalll piece of wood. Tap/bang at various positions along the fan hub until it separates from the alternator.

I have used two different methods for removing the alternator from the fan shroud. You can try banging the fan shroud on the 4x4's and the alternator may just drop out of the fan shroud. If that doesn't work, another method is to hammer on the small studs on the alternator until it falls out of the shroud. If you use the second method, protect the studs by putting the nuts back on them and hammering on the nuts.

Thanks Tom. I tried all the above with no luck. Maybe not hard enough, as I was afraid of breaking the housing. So, the six screws don't have to be removed? Only the nuts and flat washers? Thank you!

mine wouldnt come apart without also taking out the screws even though when I got them out they werent actually threaded to any thing I think it was just the extra friction. also try using a good sized dead blow mallet it transfers more energy without bouncing

I tried removing the screws. They didn't appear to be holding anything in the housing, but the alternator itself then wanted to separate. I didn't want to go there, so I lubricated the holes before re-installing the screws, but still no luck. I'll try harder this afternoon. Thanks for the replys!

Don't be afraid to wack it really hard.

Try the process suggested by John Walker. Mine fell out onto the floor that way.
