Opinions on Zinc plating parts which contact oil?
Hi,
I was thinking on getting a few engine parts zinc plated, such as the sump plate, but I wondered what peoples opinion was about plating parts which come into contact with engine oil? What makes me think it should be ok, is that the new oil return tubes and some parts of the oil lines are already plated. Thanks Alan.UK Last edited by Alan.UK; 04-09-2006 at 01:26 AM.. |

If the plating is good quality (no flaking) then plating is safe in contact with oil.
Plating can actually makes used parts fit with a closer tolerance making your rebuild even better. Not only does plating look good but it offers the possibility of fitting to a tolerance not possible when one used part is mated to a new part.

Thanks Henry.
I normally get most things done but will now add those engine parts to the list. Here is a pic of the last batch for a 70E I have just finished. ![]() ![]() ![]()

LET'S START A POOL
How long will it take to put it back together? My guess= 2+years What will it cost? In California it would cost half your net worth. Cali is a community property state! Only foolin, that looks like the way we would all like to tackles our projects. Cheers

Absolutely beautiful! Nice job. Just curious, how much did you spend on plating?

To be honest, I can't remember as I also had lots of other parts blasted and powder coated.
![]() ![]() I know the people that do it so I also get a good deal. I think I paid between £70-100. I hope that may help Alan PS. No comments on the two LH a-arms, been there. Last edited by Alan.UK; 04-10-2006 at 12:14 PM.. |

Hello, Alan.
I just poppeed in from the wlding for a drink! The main thing to watch is the hydrogen embrittlement issue. This is serious in the case of springs and any high stress part like bolts.... It can be minimised by heating in an oven, but this MUST be done very rapidly after plating..like 30 minutes. There is nowhere cheap round here who I would trust to do this correctly.. Only an aerospace place ( I think you have some round your way?) could be relied on generally.. Kind regards David |

Hi Allan - were those parts yellow zinc or cad plated?
The reason I as is my parts just got back from cad plating and the plater did an awful job - lots of uneven coating and scratches off with a fingernail! I'm now face with beadblasting it all again and starting over. Thanks Andrew M

Hi Andrew,
Sorry to hear your plating is not up to standard. All the plating I had done was zinc, mostly yellow, but also some clear. None of it will scratch off. Hope you manage to sort it out Alan

I'm off to the platers today - I've got to go out of town for a few days, so hopefully they can clean it all up and replate in yellow zinc for my return.

Hi Andrew,
Yellow Cad really doesn't look that great and isn't all that durable either. What you really want is the Zinc. It may not be original and is superior in almost all respects except for acting as a lubricant for the bolt threats. I learned this the hard way too. I changed my Cad to Zinc after a couple of batches. Long story. Good luck. Bob |

Thanks Bob,
I have just had another large batch done for my RHD 2.2S that I have just started restoring. Virtually every part of the car (that can be) is either being, painted, plated, powder coated, re-chromed or re-anodized. I will try and get some more pics. Alan |

Alan,
It is alot of fun hey. Nearly every part I had to replace due to some pitting that I was not satisfied with. Having a plated part look right is even more challanging then paint. You can't hide anything under plated. The assembly is a joy when you have a pile of clean parts like what you have. Cheers. Bob |

Hi,
Mike: The engine yoke I bought from you works great. It is with the powder coaters now. I will get some pics soon. At the Auto jumble I was in my SS 3.2 (based around a silver 1971T). The sender problem was as we discussed, it was a later sender (0-10) while the early gauges are (0-5). Bob: As you mention it is much easier fitting up a car when all the parts are clean. With my S I am being even more anal, as far as all the door frames and each bar on the rear grill is being re-polished and anodised. I should have the first batch of plating back tomorrow as well as all the powder coated suspension parts. Cheers Alan
