I'm working with ARP to calculate the forces my recent excursion to 8500 RPM had on my rod bolts. One of the things we need to know is the weight of the rod beyond the big end. Anyone know this?
Got a Guestimate even? Thanks!

If you mean beyond the center of the big end, just weigh a cap. That is the mass thats trying to separate and break the bolts, but it repreresents only one contribution to a very complex set of dynamic forces. The actual strain on a rod bolt would probably be easier to measure than to calculate although if you have a good 3D model it would be easy to run an FEA.

Unfortunately i don't have a scale capable of that... ARP has all the models and a program set up with all the variables they need. this is the last piece I need to provide them...
Anyone?

Don't know if this would help... Just checked my Pauter rods build sheet. They specify the big end weight as 415 grams and an overall weight of 592 grams = 177 grams. This is for a 3.2l rod. Lou

That might work, since the Pauter rod is actually a little on the heavy side. If you don't have it by tomorrow, I'll be able to get it for you first thing in the morning.

Charles, if you found the rods and are willing to weigh that end, I'd sure appreciate it!

I just noticed that the total weight of the Pauter rod was less than the one Charles checked. 660g vs. 592g... Just for reference, Charles who made the rod you checked? Thanks! Lou

Well we way overestimated the weight of a wristpin. By dead reckonging I'd say it was 75 so we put in 100grams for that. (It was certainly no mroe than 1/2 the rod-end weight!) They total force at 8533 RPM was 6k lbs. The strength of each bolt is 9k#. Two makes 18k lbs. So we're at only 1/3rd the pure clamp strength of those rod-bolts.

The rod I weighed was a stock rod. I've noticed that a lot of the aftermarket rods very closely resemble the weight distribution of the stock rods.

Hmmm.... I'm thinking this is "bob weight" and not dead weight of that rod-end... Anyone got the weight of the "cap" that I could subtract from the total?
