One Case Journal Pitted
Can someone please comment on this journal? All the other journals are in decent shape but this one has lots of pitting. I will get the case measured, but what if any effect does will this have?

That's odd, don't think I've seen that before but I suppose an extended sitting interval without an oil-change could do that. Acid's build up in oil over time and a long interval (say an entire winter with old oil?) might do this?
I doubt it will affect your engine as the bearings still have they're primary support in place, but I suppose it couldn't hurt to have it checked.

One pit is actually deep, should I address this in any way? can it be filled?

I'm sure a decent welder could fill it, but then it would have to be bored. However once again I don't think it would be necessary. Unless that pit is 1/4" wide I don't think the bearing would "sink" into it.

I think it depends on the cause.
If its is a worn case..problem... If its only pitting due to local erosion, or casting defect, and all is stright and in spec..absolutely no problem.. If you want belt and braces I have glued shells in with success... Kind regards david |

I confess to not exactly knowing what David was saying. I assume it means something like 'to really beef it up...'?
David, can you elaborate on gluing the shell in? thanks!

Sorry, guys!
Yes, I have twice used this bodge... You need to use some high tec glue..I used something recommened by 3M tech dept..it is a cheeep alternative to a linebore in the 356 motor.. I would say that on the 911, just one slightly oversize housing would not make me linebore..hence the gap-filling glue solution. But if its not stright..linebore.. Kind regards David |
