The Case is finally together - and it turns freely!
Well, after a couple issues with my local machine shop, the rebuild IS back on track.
On the first attempt, the crank binded badly and the issue was finally (after much head scratching and dry assemblies) traced to be a mis-machined bearing web that didn't allow quite enough clearance for the turbo oil pump. Well, the intermediate shaft was straightened, the pump taken apart and inspected, and the case cleaned better than the first time. Today I assembled the case halves and the crank turns freely now. No binding, only a little friction from the synthetic assembly lube (royal purple - boy is it sticky!), good squeeze out of the threebond, etc. In short, I'm happy/ Supertec headstuds should be here early this week - In the mean time, I'm going to do the measurements on the heads and cylinders to work out an actual compression ration for the 66mm crank w/ 92mm P&Cs. Good to see your project is progressing. Is that the same shop doing your heads? What method did you use torqueing the rod bolts? Are
It won't be long now before you are breaking her in. Best of luck. Regards, |
Hey Bernard -
A local shop did the case web machining after I decided late in the process to use a turbo oil pump - unfortunately, they didn't take enough off the left side of the case and it pressed enough on the pump to bent the intermediate shaft a bit and bind the rotating assembly. The heads and rest of the case machining were done by EBS Racing - I've done stuff with them before and it worked out great. I would have gone Supertec due to Henrys helpful nature on this board, but he was up to his eyeballs in work at the time. and had a bit longer wait for turnaround - I did buy the twinplug distributor from him though! Rod bolts are ARP and were tightened by the strech method using a dial indicator to measure bolt stretch. Looks great!

Did you replate the through bolts? They look all nice and shiny.....if so, whi did the replating?
I am in Calgary and happy to help/comment/assist if needed.... Dennis |
NICE! What did you use to seal the cc plate to the cylinder? Which oil pump is that?
|
Dennis - I did replate the hardware locally. Wespin (sp?) did the work after a place in Edmonton screwed it up- talk to a guy called Bippen if you drop stuff by. I went with yellow zinc for everything - my initial attempt at cad plating didn't look too great.
Kenik - I used a piece of plexiglass with a hole drilled in it. Seal to cylinder was done using a bit of grease. Worked well enough that I'll clean up the edges and keep it for future use. The pump is a Turbo oil pump - I'll check to see if I have a part # for reference. Regards, Andrew M |
The only reason I ask is that I have never had luck with grease. Last time I did it I had to use silicone.
|
The grease was a green brake grease that was pretty heavy weight - sealed up great and no leaks anywhere and cleaned right up with some rubbing alcohol when done. I'd like to say this was by design, but rather it was what was on hand at the time :)

Hmmm; I used black moly graphite grease. It bled through in no time. I'll have to try the green grease.
|
Yeah, I have used Bipin at Westpen for all my stuff, the price is wildly variable though, some times he does a whole box for $50, next time I bring him two parts and it is $200.....
Quality is good though..... Dennis |
Looks great so far.
Keep the pictures coming. 92mm pistons on a 66 crank should require a .040 (1mm) base gasket for 10.5:1 BTW: the case through bolts go the other way:) |
Dennis - actually I think I got Bipins name from one of your posts a while back! He charged me a bit, but said it would be chaper next time.
Henry - Thanks, I'm glad I ordered the 1mm base gaskets from you a while back (along with the Threebond sealants). I just found out that I can get 94 octane pump gas from a few gas stations up here, so I'm thinking that 10.5:1 will work just fine. Case bolts in the wrong way!?! Do I have to take it apart again?! ;)(kidding - Factory manual shows one way, Waynes book the other - consensus is either one is fine right? right??) Regards, Andrew M |
Where in Calgary can you get 94 octane? Is it the Mohawk ethanol blend or is there "real" 94 octane around?
I worry about using ethanol in my CIS car....too much chance for water in all them fiddly parts.... Dennis |
I was thinking Mohawk, so I guess it's ethanol :(
Is their 92 octane also a blend? AM |
So did you fire it up last Sunday?
|
Actually, I just got back from the garage and it fired up first try! I ran it for ~40 min, didn't see any leaks, and other than some rough carbs, it sounded great. With a couple of days for fine tuning, I should be out on the 5th at Race City no problem!
Thanks to everybody on the board for assistance on this project - I really appriciate all the help, suggestions and recommendations. I'll get some pics up once I get it tuned and dyno'd. Regards, Andrew M |
Looks great, good to hear it is up and running!!
A side not for those who want to CC heads and piston domes. I use wheel bearing grease (cheap ole tub of Quaker state) and never had the seal leak at all. Cheers |
A brief concern about your plated hardware - if it was initially cad plated, was it properly baked immediately after plating?
Looks great, by the way, happy to hear you got that binding issue sorted out. |
Yes, it was plated and immediately baked- it just looked like crap, so it was redone in yellow zinc.
