Oil Coolers

I have a 72 engine with a screw style oil cooler. After my rebuild I noticed oil was leaking from the cooler, so I went through the labor of pulling it off and when inspected i noticed on the engine side oil leaking down from the upper left side passage (where the new oil seals are located).
I thought that Maybe I just hadnt been careful enough when installing it,with the engine out, and Maybe the New oil seal was in a bind/crimped once installed. So, this next time I used some gasket sealer on the New gaskets and put the oil cooler back on. It is still leaking.
When the oil cooler was off I noticed the side that meshes with the engine to appear to be "bubbled out" a little bit. It isnt a square surface. Are these supposed to be this way. (I dont think so) What would cause this "warpage"? After thinking about it more it made sense that If it is not supposed to be bubbled out it may not be fully mating to the engine side thus causing a small oil leak because the New seals arent being fully compressed.
Your ideas, photos, and comments are Greatly Appreciated.
Thanks!
