Exhaust Stud Quandary

Pelican sent me Porsche exhaust studs which were too long.
Some of the local import auto part store stock generic head studs which are black( hardened?).

1) are these ok to use in a non-turbo SC?
2 ) does any one know what hardness the Porsche studs are?

Properly torqued studs of almost any grade will work just fine.
After machining 100s of broken exhaust studs I would be surprised to hear that they were anything special.

I will say that the stretch bolts use to mount the infamous thermal reactors found on the 75-77 2.7 CIS engine seemed to be made of some very tuff material.

The black on the fastener is probably a conversion coating called black oxide which is NOT corrosion resistant and not suitable for exterior use, I wouldn't use them.

The Porsche studs are grade G. The coating is also thicker than what you'd normally find on a Porsche spec'd fastener but nothing else stands out.
