Non-stock oil tank oil filter setup, options?

If I go with front mounted oil tank, what are my options for what to do about oil filter? Only one I know about is the smart racing product that mounts at the engine oil cooler location.

I was thinking about keeping engine oil cooler and figured there must be some sort of oil filter mounting component with AN fittings on it or something.

thx, Joe

Joe,

I am not in favor of a front oil tank location. There is a better way and Porsche uses it with the GT3.

Here are some recent discussions:
”2.8 Short Stroke Compression Ratio fine-tuning“.
and
”Oil Tank location“.

There are inexpensive oil filter mounts with US pipe female ports that you install AN, metric or whatever to. I think most are -12.

The cool Porsche part is the 916 oil filter console used on a ’72 (only) 911S and on the 914-6GT. It is a 3-port casting with an integral safety pressure valve and thermostat. You can mod a ’72 (only) 911T or 911E oil filter console to this configuration.

Best,
Grady

There are plently of options out there. Several of the racing supply places that specialize in Porsche equipment will carry what you need.

You can also do a google search for "filter canister"

Here is a link to a site that sells a system similar to what I am using: http://www.cmfilters.com/remote.cfm#

Or you could try something like PegasusRacing sells: http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/group.asp?GroupID=OILFILTADAPT

As long as the filter can handle a 12-AN sized line, you should be fine.

Details of what you should get will greatly depend on your application and what engine/cooler setup you are trying to run.

Realize too that if you put the tank in the front you will most likely have to bring an oil breather line to the front of the car.

I have seen some people try to use a catch can back in the engine compartment and had it constantly over flow.

this is the set-up on my car.

In lieu of the $800 SRP tank, I made my own and saved a chunk of change. The filter is a Canton.

I havent installed the breather can yet, but Im using a front mounted Petesen breather can. and running both the tank vent to it, and a line from the engine vent

Nice. I had heard about Canton several months ago, but have yet to figure out who they were and where to get their stuff from.

Please give out some leads!

Regarding the catch can in the rear and have it constantly over flow.... Saw a setup last week at Peter Dawe's shop, that would no doubt fix that problem. Breather line ran up the inside of car attached to cage shock tower braces, up main loop of roll cage with catch can on left side of car.

also interested on the canton info...

Here's one. 935 style. The catch can is the plastic windshield washer tank.
